Are you an employer located in Minnesota? If so, recent changes to state leave legislation could affect you and your employees. Passed in May, the Women's Economic Security Act contains several laws that came into effect on August 1, 2014.Make sure you know which parts of the Act are now effective, as well as their implications for managing leave in your workplace.
1) Pregnancy and parental leave
The Act doubles unpaid pregnancy and parental leave from six to 12 weeks under the Parental Leave Act, which affects employers with 21 or more employees.
2) Pregnancy rights
Employees are now able to bring a civil action to enforce the law requiring employers to provide nursing women with unpaid break times to express breast milk.
3) New sick leave allowances
The Act allows employees to use their earned sick leave days for absence caused by circumstances involving sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking. The situation can involve the employee or another person requiring the employee’s care, such as:

Circumstances requiring absence could include activities such as counselling, relocation and legal action.
